All of the village’s tenuous calm came to an end as soon as the sun went down, Leaf and Berry racing inside with wide eyes to exclaim—there was something pacing on the other side of the rowan trees.

Rushing out the back door, Saffron was one of the first to find a place on the stone steps, a group of other Wicklow residents joining him, others pushing open windows in the attic and bedrooms to all stop and listen. Overhead, thunder rumbled and wind scattered through windchimes like screeching pixies. Saffron just held his breath and tried to listen as the thunder rolled away.

Before any other sounds came—there was a smell. One of rot, wet fur, blood, breath.

And then, through the trees—crunching. The slow, repetitive crunch, crunch, crunch of heavy feet making their way through the undergrowth. In the last light of the sun, Saffron managed a glimpse of it—blacker than the night sky, hunched with wiry fur, standing larger than a horse or a bear. Unlike anything he’d ever seen.

It was the wolf.
